My friend Sarah Brown has been working on a really difficult, really important project. For 5 years, she’s been doing extensive research on the historical harm done by her ancestors as slaveholders. In her 40 years as a blues bass player sharing the stage with legends, the odds are good she’s played with artists who were descendants of people enslaved by her family.
Sarah is a descendent of George Washington’s family, and has come face to face with wills and inventories (yeah, inventories…) that form the foundation of her research. She’s found and met with some of the families of those enslaved, listened to their stories, shared her own, and discovered a powerful sense of community.
This project is about addressing this historical harm. It’s about putting information out there that’s hard to look at, but imperative to reveal. There will be a book. There will be songs.
It’s a hell of an undertaking. The project is called The Washingtons and The Blues. There’s more research to do, and she’s needs some help to make it happen. I hope you'll help. More info and her first music video are posted on the GoFundMe page.
